Money, Power, Respect...the key to life?: "Now...I know I may recieve some backlash from this, but hey! these are MY thoughts. Now a week or so ago, my best friend told me to youtube a few videos about Lady Gaga && Jay-Z, and it discussed the Illuminati. The videos contained some valid points && caused me to think about a lot of things. Now I am already observant && I know that people are easily influenced && that we ALL are robots due to my studies (sociology) BUT the responses from the people are what made me laugh && *twist up my mouth* the most.
Yes, we live in a capitalistic society. Yes, there are a FEW amount of people that run EVERYTHING in society. && well you know the rest. Karl Marx believed there would be a revolution from the result of capitalism, but in order for it to occur, people need to have a collective consciousness. Everyone had to realize to know what was going on && know where they stood in society. Personally, if it was to happen it would not be for centuries.
We are an mechanical society && have become more individualisic...plainly put we are SELFISH. Human beings do what they can && want to do to better their outcome. That is where I do not fault anyone that has become famous or whatever, because everyone wants to be successful. But when the ways you used to obtain your means are in question, thats when I question you.
Now Lady Gaga, a good artist I might add just sprouts the hell up virtually out of nowhere I question it. She really just popped on the tv, && from that moment on been famous. Jay-Z had more progress, he is a great lyricists && business man, but why has no other rap artist been able to "eat" like he has??? Diddy is a very smart business man as well, but he does not possess the control && influence over the people like Jay does.
When i tweeted my views on Jay-Z, I recieved backlash, NOT THAT I GIVE A FLYIN RATS BACKSIDE, but I was not mad at why they were saying things, I became mad at WHAT they were saying. Of course fans are going to stick up for their fav artist, but some folks just sounded plain f'n dumb. "if he wana worship the devil, idc, he's a gud artist' 'i mean, he can do what he want. he is a good business man, so what he does outside of that, idc...im just a fan of his music'...BASICALLY so you mean to fvkn tell me, that if this man killed people and etc you would not care, just as long as he makes good music<<
Money && power go hand and hand...i mean folks dont have to like you, to respect you. But how far is TOO far? I mean it comes to a point when it is not even respect anymore its the loss of the little identity that people have. Now Jay is not alone in this catergory...Jay said dont mess with Chris Brown, folks wouldn't let the poor thing perform. Weezy said drink cough medicine, now everybody off that lean. Rihanna cuts her hair every 5 seconds, females walk around damn near bald. Nicki Minaj says she a barbie now every poor soul has 'harajuku' 'barbie' 'minaj' && etc attached to their name. ITS RIDICULOUS! Now dont get me wrong, I am not an exception to this, I follow fashion trends(evidence of influence), I drink Ciroc cause Diddy advertised it, && etc, BUT i also have common sense (well most of the time lol).
Its just that a lot of us look at the material objects and say 'i wana be that' 'i wana do that' && tend to not care about the routes people go to obtain those things. All I am saying is we all are being used, just KNOW when you are.

Dr. Cornel West comes to Rutgers
Dr. Cornel West comes to Rutgers: "
Wow. Wow is the only word that can describe his presence and speech. I was first introduced to Dr. Cornel West when I had to read his book, 'Race Matters' in high school. That booked was wrapped in so academic jargon, I could barely wrap my mind around it, but now I am older and can probably better understand it now.
I was excited when I heard he was coming to Rutgers to speak because I know he had a lot to say in his speech on 'Race and Democracy in the Age of Obama.' What I did not know was that he was a man of witty expressions and comic relief. I believe that is the best way to lecture to a group of college kids because we do not want to have to pull out a dictionary during a speech just to comprehend a point. Dr. West did an excellent job of expresing his ideas without losing his audience because he made us feel comfortable.
On to the speech!
His speech shed som much light on the struggle of African American people, in addition to the history of this country. You have to know the past, to understand the present. He talked of the many greats such as Sojourner Truth, Malcolm X, Martin Luther King Jr., Frederick Douglass, and many more; key word 'GREATS'. The problem is that many people, especially African American people think that Obama is 'great,' but Dr. West broke it down about how he is successful. It all made sense. I am a fan of Obama, but there is a difference between being successful and being great. Will people remember your name because you accomplished something by going with the current or going against the current for a greater cause?
Many of the greats made a difference because they made a powerful impact, but doing something out of the ordinary, being a 'misfit' as Dr. West would call it. Is Obama a misfit? Its a question that can be argued by either side, I know he is still early in his presidency, but what has he done so far? He is trying to get the white politicans to listen and develop new programs, but is he demanding that they do(misfit)? In order for Obama to become 'great' he has to make an effort to put a dent in the old ways of this country, go against the grain not to be popular, but because it is only right.
Dr. West talked about the 'black agenda' and how the black agenda is not only for blacks, but has to be universal. Agreed. We(blacks) can try to make a change in our circumstance, but we would have to develop ways to change the people that control our circumstance as well. The 'black agenda' is not ALL good, you have to incorporate the 'funk'... the good and the bad. We have to get to the root of the problem and not just the problem itself i.e. white supremacy, black self hatred, racism, sexism, and etc. Dr. West said 'Don't talk about truth unless your allowing the suffering to speak,' the ultimate truth is the pure reality, not the romanicized side because then only half of the people can relate.
We as a people have to do better and stop ignoring what has happened(slavery, oppression, etc) and acknowledge it because keeping it suppressed is only hindering us. So I leave you with this quote of Dr. Cornel West 'folks cant ride your back unless it's bent.'
